Being the daughter of movie stars (Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd), Dern, 31, has fashioned an ironic career for herself, specializing in low-rent girls in trouble-like the oversexed young woman in "Rambling Rose" (which brought a Best Actress Oscar nomination) and the glue-sniffing abortion-debate pawn in "Citizen Ruth" (which should have brought her a nomination). She's outrageously provocative, but never a caricature.
