THE CLOCK IS RUNNING

WE CHOSE TO GO TO THE MOON

The first Mercury mission was a fresh victory when President John F. Kennedy announced on May 25, 1961, that as part of America's thrust to win the Cold War, it should land a man on the moon before the decade was out. The challenge was more than a technological contest against the Soviets, more than a race to new lands. Never before had a person set foot on another celestial body, looked back and seen one planet, alone. The maps and machinery of these new pioneers took mankind to another world; cool heads and Lady Luck carried them home to their families; and Kennedy's vigor lit the fire beneath a generation.
