"LONG LIVE THE MILLION MAN MARCH": Several hundred thousand black men filled the Mall in Washington, D.C. Monday morning for a prayer service as the Million Man March began. Just after sunrise, a minister urged the crowd to pull together and work to eliminate violence, drugs and other social problems. As men continued to stream into the area, bands played and the Mall shook with chants of "Long live the Million Man March!" As the day progressed, a stream of 80 speakers included Jesse Jackson, Washington Mayor Marion Barry, Rosa Parks, Maya Angelou and Betty Shabazz, the widow of Malcolm X. "This was one of the most dignified events I have ever witnessed," reports National Correspondent Jack White. "A truly amazing display. This was not the mood of a pep rally. It was very sober. I don't need to tell anyone of the great potential for chaos in this situation. But there was only patience, dignity and pride among the people that were here. This march will go a long way to changing the minds of people who still have an open mind about black people."
